  • Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts
    Houses the Manorial Documents Register (see Wales Court Records) and the National Register of Archives (NRA)
  • County Record Offices
    All Welsh counties have an archive that contains records about its particular area. Includes land records, church records, taxation records, probate records
  • Public and Academic Libraries
    Public libraries have local histories, city directories, maps, newspapers, family histories, parish registers, manuscripts. Academic libraries house family papers and estate records

Some of the major records sources that can be used for genealogy research in Wales include:

  • Births, baptisms, deaths, and burials were kept by some towns as early as 1586
  • Marriages were kept by some towns as early as 1541
  • National census records were recorded every 10 years starting in 1801
  • Land records were kept by the towns and counties from the time they were settled
  • Probate records were kept by the local courts from 1543 to the present
  • Churches sometimes kept records of the christenings, marriages, deaths, or other information about their members
  • Newspapers were written in many areas as early as 1690s that contain information such as notices of marriages, notices of death, and obituaries
