Description

The work at hand names some 2,500 planters who played a part in defending and securing the Plantation of Ulster during the 1641 rebellion and the Williamite War of 1688-1691. As such, this book is divided into two alphabetically arranged lists. The first and smaller of the two lists, “Muster Roll of Garrison in the City of Londonderry, 1642-1643,” identifies 905 men in 9 foot companies who defended Derry’s walls during the siege of 1641/1642. The second list concerns the Ulstermen who defended Londonderry against the Jacobite opposition to William of Orange in Ireland. Mr. Mitchell’s main source in this instance is William R. Young’s “Fighters of Derry–Their Deeds and Descendants . . . 1688-1691.”
